Red Barn Katahdins

Breed Stock

We raise Katahdin Hair Sheep. We’ve been a part of the NSIP (National Sheep Improvement Program) since 2004, KHSI (Katahdin Hair Sheep International) since 1999, the Iowa SCRAPIE program, and done our fair share of testing. The flock we have has high maternal traits, meaning they have a higher than average lamb crop and have enough milk to raise them.

We offer 2 month old lambs in May-June. We also have breeding rams available. Steve tends to post sheep currently for sale on our Facebook Page.

Commercial Lambs

We don’t specialize in commercial lambs, however, we sometimes offer some of our culls, or our slow growers at a reduce price. These are not always available, but you can ask about getting on a waiting list.

Management

We are a small farm. We have built paddocks into our fencing to allow us to rotational graze our sheep. This keeps parasites down and gives the sheep higher nutrition. We tend to lamb in early spring, usually March. Lambs are ready to go by May or early June.

Chickens

We raise a small flock of chickens. We love getting farm fresh eggs. Steve spends a lot of time trying to tweak our process, to keep the chickens happy and our eggs clean. I (Melissa) think the chickens are his favorite past time.
